Make Learning Fun!

In this day and age, saying to students “come in class, sit down and turn to page 62″ just isn’t capturing our children’s imaginations. No wonder there is such a high rate of bored kids failing to reach their potential when there are interactive games and all manner of electrical devices competing  for their attention.

Kids still love books, it’s just they require a lot more from them these days!

This is where The Book Mums come in. We have internet-linked titles, audio, sound chips, flaps, wipe-clean, puzzles:  Tell us what they are passionate about, where you would like to help them improve, any issues you would like to resolve and our Fairy Book Mother team will suggest the very thing.

January is a time of fresh starts and renewal. We have some fantastic new Learning to Read sets on offer at the moment that really help kids to make the connection for themselves. Check out our Special Offers page and please get in touch with any questions.

As you probably know, we offer home parties which can be coffee mornings or evening parties or even coming along to your work or school, so please let us know if you would like us to “bring Usborne to you“.

Usborne Books Grow Readers

The Book Mums LOVE Usborne Farmyard Tales!

Usborne Books famous series Farmyard Tales have been enouraging young readers for thirty years.  The unique idea of “shared reading” means there is a simple line of text at the top of each page for the aspiring reader to attempt, with a longer paragraph for the confident reader or adult to expand the story.

Combined with the late, great illustrator Stephen Cartwright’s little yellow duck to find on every page, this wonderful series really keeps young children engaged.

Once children are familiar with Poppy and Sam and all their adventures on Appletree Farm, there are a whole series of titles that help them to Tell The Time, Learn a Language, Make & Do Crafts and Cookery, introduce them to Nature, boxed games, jigsaws and activity cards.

Under £1 a book!

At The Book Mums, we are pleased to announce a fantastic way to start your child’s reading journey with this fabulous boxed set of all twenty Farmyard Tales for under £20!

Suitable from 2yrs upwards, this offer is only available whilst stocks last, so please use order code 53214 or contact us for FREE local delivery in the St Albans area.

“What a great book! We’ve been reading this for over a year, and now Millie can read the top lines for herself, so it has a new freshness.”

Summer Hols – Part 1

Tuesday was just “one of those days” Great plans made. Auntie Mandy arrived to watch kids. Great plans changed. Auntie Mandy left to get back to her busy day – don’t ask!

Just can't get the staffWednesday I took the girls with me to do an Usborne Book Stall at DJ’s Jungle Adventure. Helen, the new owner, is systematically upgrading the whole of our local soft play centre. Tuesday it was the turn of the loo’s to get a make-over. Dais came desperately running up to tell me “those mens (sic) won’t let me in the toilet”.

By the time I had shown her the Baby Change Room, it was all too late. I had to bundle her in the car and take her home to get changed. I left Molly in charge of the book stall, and this is the note that greeted me on my return!
Luckily it rained on Thursday. (Been way too hot for a fat bird). I managed to get a boot full of give-aways and throw-aways to the charity shop and tip. I only had to carry a squeeling Dais back into the shop once – to retrieve a large pink pony, the rest has gone … phew!

The girls have both been pretty good today. Having so much more room in the house has enabled them to discover long-lost toys, books and games. Not that they did. They took every cushion off every sofa and built a large camp in the front room.

Plus, their new life-jackets for our sea-faring canoe arrived. That kept them amused for hours, pretending to be at sea, “oaring” the boat, blowing the whistles and doing safety drills!

Daddy is home and offering to cook dinner. Time to drink a cold one in the garden and update my blog then?

Child Labour

Dais came along to an end of term party at a local Toddler Group where I was working last week. We were wearing matching Usborne T shirts and she was helping me demonstrate her favourite titles. When we were heading out the door she said “We’re twins Mummy” – and so we were.

However, I did NOT trash the jewellery stall, poke a delicious home made cupcake down the drain or run off with the face painter’s mirror, so not that similar really.

However, she redeemed herself by showing the other tots how our new Wind-Up Train Book works http://tinyurl.com/5m68vz which created a lot of interest and lead to sales, so maybe using cheap child labour was quite a good idea after all?
